FY 24 APPROVED OPERATING BUDGET

of untreated or partially treated wastewater from the system, and normalizing that number by total system size. An industry-accepted guideline for good performance is 2.5 SSOs per 100 miles sewer line per year. Lower measures indicate better performance.

WHAT IS BEING DONE AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO TRACK:

SSOs are regulated by our permits and can present risks to human health and the environment. To minimize the number of SSOs we: ensure proper design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the sewer system; identify aging system components for upgrade, rehabilitation, or replacement; conduct programmed preventive maintenance at locations that are prone to blockages; and conduct customer outreach to minimize their improper disposal of fats, oils, grease, wipes, and rags.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO CURRENT PERFORMANCE:

Well-trained staff and proactive system maintenance have positive impact on system performance. Proper management of collection system capacity minimizes the potential of system overload. Customers’ improper disposal of fats, oils, grease, wipes, and rags can contribute to system blockages and SSOs.
