ORIGIN & PURPOSE: Established by the Federal Hatch Act (1987) and the Smith-Lever Act (1887), the University of Maryland, Harford County Ofce provides educational outreach education from the University of Maryland, College Park as part of their three-fold mission as a land grant institution which provides teaching, research and educational outreach. The University of Maryland Extension in Harford County provides educational programs based on the needs of county residents. Emphasis is placed on the following program areas: Agriculture and Food Systems, Environment and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Science and 4-H Youth Development. Extension is funded through county, state and federal dollars. Grants and donations fund special projects as warranted. The budget is developed by the fscal ofce of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in consultation with the Assistant Director of Operations and leadership from the University of Maryland Harford Ofce.
