PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project will provide funding to acquire Rapid DNA (RDNA) technology. Funding includes the purchase of commercially available cutting edge technology enabling near instantaneous DNA analysis, dramatically reducing turnaround times from months to under two hours. It allows for the immediate analysis of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) samples collected from crime scenes, victims, or suspects delivering preliminary results in a fraction of the time required by traditional testing methods. This offers a significant advantage in criminal investigations by drastically reducing the time between evidence collection and actionable leads. Rapid DNA devices can analyze multiple samples simultaneously and provide results that can be uploaded to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a national database that allows for comparisons with profiles of known offenders as well as unidentified DNA collected from crime scenes across the country. This real time comparison significantly increases the likelihood of identifying suspects quickly and accurately, which is vital to protecting public safety and preventing further offenses.
