4-H in Harford County

Theresa Lilienthal

Harford County's 4-H program was established in 1921. At present, there are currently 20 different 4-H clubs operating as general clubs or as special interest clubs.

These clubs are made possible through the hard work and dedication of the County Extension Agent, the 4-H Educator, and Program Staff as well as the 120 volunteers who have completed training through the University of Maryland. Many of these volunteers were 4-H members in their youth and have continued to invest their time and talent to benefit our community through service.

Indeed, many members will tell you that 4-H is not just for the youth. While membership is for youth ages 5-18, the entire family is usually involved. Parents and grandparents can serve as project and club leaders. Family memories are made by working on projects and exhibits, going to fairs, and participating in club and group outings. In addition to participating in local agricultural fairs, a highlight of the summer is “a week along the Creek” at the Camp of the Loving Heart. This 184-acre site along Deer Creek is the oldest 4-H camp in Maryland and one of the oldest continuous 4-H camps in the country. Campers often return year after year and then train to become counselors who then come back as adult volunteers demonstrating the multigenerational continuity and involvement that is unique and treasured within the 4-H program.
