Harford Legacy Farm Commemorative Book

Harford Legacy Farm | 44

Cummings Farm est. 1909 - Street, MD Current Owners: Susan Cummings Original Purchaser: Andrew Cummings Current Acreage: 98 Current Agricultural Products or Services: leased to Scott Reeves - corn and soybeans Preserved My grandfather, Andrew Cummings, purchased the farm in 1909 from Susan J. Lee. I have the original deed and tax levy, but it was done on mimeograph paper and then signed so it is very, very faded.

The farm then went to my father Andrew T. Cummings. My father put the farm in the Rural Legacy Program in July 2007.

The family is happy to have preserved this beautiful tract of land within the arms of Deer Creek.

Rising to Today's Challenges

Sharon Stowers, Ph.D., RDN, Harford Community College

Today's, farmers in our country, and nationally, are confronting serious challenges to provide nutritious, affordable food. These factors include increasing production costs and government regulations, extreme weather events, environmental degradation, lack of affordable land, and rapidly changing consumer demands. Our county's agricultural producers are rising to these challenges by: Planting cover crops to improve soil health, Practicing integrated pest management to reduce pesticide use, ensuring all animal products are antibiotic-free when they reach your table, using permaculture techniques, integrating plants and animals into mutually beneficial systems, employing innovative technologies, such as hydroponics, engaging in social media, farmers markets, and agritourism to market directly to the public.
